Candidates must possess the prescribed educational or technical qualification for the selected JE post and corresponding exam group.
Indian citizens and other eligible categories specified by the Government of India may apply, subject to the prescribed conditions.
The prescribed normal age range for JE is 18–33 years, with applicable relaxations for eligible categories.
Candidates must satisfy the medical standard prescribed for the particular post. Medical standards vary by category.
The prescribed qualification is post-specific. For many JE categories, a three-year Diploma in the relevant Engineering discipline or a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology in the prescribed discipline is accepted.
The notification maps qualifications to technical exam groups including Mechanical and Allied Engineering, Electrical and Allied Engineering, Electronics and Allied Engineering, and Civil and Allied Engineering.
Mechanical-related qualifications include Mechanical, Production, Automobile, Manufacturing, Mechatronics, Industrial, Machining, Tools & Machining and Tools & Die Making Engineering. Electrical-related qualifications include Electrical Engineering and specified combinations. Electronics-related qualifications include Electronics, Instrumentation & Control, Communication, Computer Science, Computer Engineering and Information Technology. Civil JE categories require the prescribed Civil Engineering qualification.
The prescribed educational or technical qualification must already have been obtained from a recognized University, Institute or Board as applicable. Candidates awaiting the final result of the prescribed qualification are not eligible.
The normal prescribed age range for Junior Engineer posts is 18 to 33 years.
Age relaxation is available to eligible categories such as SC, ST, OBC-NCL, PwBD, Ex-Servicemen and other categories according to the applicable Government rules.

The common first-stage CBT is used for screening and shortlisting candidates for CBT-II.
The second-stage CBT includes common subjects and 100 questions on Technical Abilities.
Shortlisted candidates must produce original educational, age, category and other required documents.
Selected candidates must pass the prescribed Railway medical fitness standard for the opted post.
